Little Sparta

Little Sparta is a London based band named after the garden of poet & artist Ian Hamilton Finlay. The music ranges from post-rock folk to dirty blues but with a cinematic sensibility that lends itself to images of all sorts from painting to film.

The collaborative recordings with Scottish poet Gerry Mitchell were described by Pitchfork as being ‘Bittersweet and unpretentious’ with the NME lauding the ‘Elegant, waning violins and craggy folkisms’. There have been releases with the growled blues of Mike Patrick, mythic ballads with Sally Timms (Mekons) and a live musical score to the film The Adventures of Price Achmed that was described as ‘a perfect match of music and film’ at 2007’s Latitude festival.

Most recently the band have provided music to a film accompanying the exhibition of photographer Allan Pollock-Morris. A CD featuring some of that music and photographs from the exhibition entitled Close: Music for an Exhibition is out in late 2011.
