Julian began his career as guitarist with the band Kitchens of Distinction, where he combined heartfelt songwriting with sonic noise experiments. With his guitar and a few effects pedals he created a soaring, symphonic sound that bands such as Radiohead have acknowledged as influential. The band released four albums on A+M and One Little Indian Records; they reached the top forty album charts in the UK but found more success in the USA where they consistently topped the college radio charts and toured many times. The band split in the late 90s and Julian has since concentrated on writing for TV and theatre. He has always written music that is powerful, expressive and resonant with emphases on memorable melody, originality and heart.

He has written music for many TV documentaries including “The Race for Everest’, “Mountain Men”, “Obsessions” and “The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn” series for the BBC and “The Boy Who Gave Birth to His Twin” and “The Man Who Slept for 19 Years” for Channel 4.He also wrote and produced the 5.1 music soundtrack for the 3D “Mummy: the Inside Story” for the British Museum and with co-composed the music for the Sanex Naked advertising campaign.

His theatre collaborations include “On the Shore of the Wide World” for the National Theatre and Royal Exchange Manchester, “One Minute” for the Crucible Sheffield and “Country Music” for the Royal Court.
