“Uptown” - Johnny Thunders & Patti Palladin
Uptown was the first writing credit for Betty Mabry in 1967 after the track was released by The Chamber Brothers. One year later, she met jazz legend Miles Davis in New York, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew’, and they were married by the end of summer 1968.
This version of the song was recorded by Johnny Thunders and Patti Palladin and was released on their Copy Cats album in 1988. The track has a fantastic funk groove with great vocal interplay between Johnny & Patti and instantly takes you to the streets of Harlem and its delights.
Betty’s own catalogue is essential investigation for any fans of Soul/Funk. She has a unique vocal delivery that is both aggressive and sexual, flamboyant and tender and her songs are raw and relevatory with real kick-ass funk and soul-fire.
