Damnably

Note

Damnably is based in East London and began as a gig promoter in 2006, founded by George Gargan. Damnably Records was established in 2009 when George booked Shonen Knife’s first UK tour in 16 years, and subsequently became the band’s European record label. Now co-run by George and Janice Li, Damnably has grown into other areas of the music business, booking tours across Europe and established itself as a music publisher since 2014.

Born in East London, George had grown up obsessed with music, listening to John Peel from aged 8 and going to multiple gigs a week while working on building sites, then lucked his way into an arts degree at De Montfort University as a mature student studying music under Professor Andy Hugill, and playing in various bands. Janice has a background in film marketing, and has been a huge fan of Shonen Knife since her teen years, coming on board as a tour manager for the band’s tour in 2009, and becoming integral to the running of Damnably as it’s activities expanded.

Since 2009, more tours and releases followed from John Peel favourites including Dick Dale, Codeine, COME, Bitch Magnet, Julie Doiron, Chris Brokaw and Geoff Farina. Damnably's love of the quirky and unusual is reflected in it’s current roster of artists, from the melodic grindcore of Kyoto's Otoboke Beaver, indie-pop surfgaze of Busan's Say Sue Me, wall-of-sound americana of Cincinnati, OH’s Wussy, to the power-pop garage rock of Dallas, TX’s American Werewolf Academy, who all share incredible guitar and compositional skills. Other recent signings include Leggy from Cincinnati, OH, didi from Columbus, OH, and Gaelynn Lea from Duluth, MN.

In 2018, Damnably celebrates it’s 12th birthday, remaining wholly independent and continually seeking out quality new music from all corners of the world.
